About

What is the Gribblehirst Community Hub?

The Hub is a thriving community meeting space, focusing on making and creativity - the creative things that happen here are the things members want to do. Already we have electronics, sewing, knitting, 3D printing, cooking, robotics Lego building and improv groups, with a game design group and a DIY bicycle workshop on the horizon now that we have been granted the lease for The Commons- the old bowling greens.

We are based in the former Edendale Bowling Club building at 5 Cabbage Tree Swamp Drive, Gribblehirst Park in Sandringham. The building is owned by Auckland Council and used by two groups- on the ground floor is the Auckland Central Community Shed - a member of menzshed.org.nz, and upstairs is the Hub, based on a makerspace/creative hubs concept.

Our Vision is:

To grow an inclusive place within the community for getting together to make, create, share skills, repair, recycle, upcycle and hatch ideas.

Our mission is:

To provide, administer and develop the Community Hub in ways that enable people to lead and develop activities and events to take place here.

We will offer several anchor activities and may also run some Hub initiatives such as Hubbub, an entertainment event.

Membership…

Running costs of the Hub are paid for by membership fees. Membership offers the opportunity to use the ‘relax’ space and any unbooked spaces at any time during opening hours; attend regular community meals and events, and to book spaces for your own group’s activities for modest extra cost. Both the Hub and the shed are membership based, with a discount for joining both. Members must be aged over 18. Follow these links to more details including our range of low/no range of rates, or just join.

Especially at this early stage, members are encouraged to help create a vibrant, creative and well-run community space, and contribute to working on, as well as in, the Hub as they can. This way the Hub will develop to suit the needs of those who use it.

Right Now…

The Hub already offers:

  • A large kitchen with rapidly improving amenities

  • Flexible open space for events and activities

  • A ‘relax’ area with tea and coffee, sofas, tables, games

  • High speed internet, a printer, music, bluetooth stereo, and a commercial espresso machine.

  • Tables, chairs, trestle tables, standing height worktables

  • Some storage

  • Projection screen 1.5m x 1.2m and digital whiteboard

We have plans to make it much better over time and as a member you can be part of this too!

Long Term…

our aspirations include a community garden, orchard, creative and adventure play area and outdoor community gathering and event space on the Commons.

At the Hub we aim to build an inclusive place within the community for coming together to make, create, share skills, repair, recycle, upcycle, and hatch ideas.
